Senior Megan House Breaks School Record for Volleyball Assists

If breaking a school record to start a season is a sign of things to come, senior Megan House and the Weedsport Girls Volleyball team can expect good things on the horizon.
House broke the Weedsport Girls Varsity Volleyball record for career assists when she got her 720th assist during a match versus Onondaga. The team ended up winning that match 3-0, and the team is currently 3-2 on the young season.
Weedsport Girls Volleyball Head Coach Erik Nicklaw was very proud of House’s early-season accomplishment.
“It was a really proud moment to see Megan get there,” he said. “She has worked really hard to get to this point and is incredibly deserving of the record and the recognition that comes with it.”
Nicklaw looked back on House’s career thus far.
“Megan has been with me on Varsity for three years,” he said, “but even as a freshman on JV I worked a lot with her on her setting. It was obvious right away that she had the potential to be great, but what really made the difference is Megan's desire to learn. She constantly asks questions and is open to feedback.”
House was thrilled to break the record, and now has her eyes set on adding to it.
“It was amazing and it meant that all of my hard work throughout the years paid off, but being able to share that moment with my team made it all the more meaningful,” she said. “A volleyball assist comes from setting your teammates up for the kill. To me, an assist is good when the play results in your team gaining confidence.”
She also reflected on her three-year-plus journey to breaking this record.
“My first year on varsity,” House recalled, “was a bit short due to sickness and injury which made the record seem out of reach, but after the success of the team last year this goal became much more realistic. I knew that this was the first milestone I wanted to reach during the ride home from our loss at sectionals last year.”
House noted she has more goals for the year still to come.
“My next goal for this season is to get to 1,000 assists before the season ends,” she added. “And a goal I would set for my team would be to make it to sectionals again this year.”
Coach Nicklaw things that goal is in play for this year’s team, which is off to a 3-2 start. But there is a lot of work to do.
“The start of the season has been a little bit inconsistent,” he noted, “but the team has shown some potential to do great things. Our goal has been to compete for a league and sectional title. I believe we have the talent to beat anyone, we just have to keep working every day to find the consistent high level of play we are capable of.”
