Weedsport Elementary School student tests positive for COVID-19

The Weedsport Central School District received notification in the afternoon of Sept.  25, 2020, of a positive COVID-19 test result for a Weedsport Elementary School student. As a result, the individual who tested positive has been placed in mandatory isolation by the Cayuga County Health Department (CCHD).

The CCHD will take the lead and will work with the school to investigate the situation and determine who may have had contact with the confirmed positive case. The District is assisting the Health Department in the contact tracing process by providing names, addresses, and phone numbers of any person who may have had contact. Based on this information it will be determined as to which individuals need to be placed into mandatory quarantine. The Cayuga County Health Department will communicate with those individuals directly. Throughout the entire process, the District will continue to communicate with state and local health departments.

While we have taken many precautions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, we recognize how difficult and concerning this is to hear about in our own school community. Please understand that due to privacy and confidentiality constraints, we are unable to share additional information on any individual.

We have a plan in place to clean and sanitize areas of concern over the weekend and we assure you that protecting the health and welfare of our students, faculty, and staff is our primary concern.

The District will provide further information to parents throughout the weekend by phone, email, and a posting to the school website regarding a return to school for the Elementary School students on Monday. The Cayuga County Health Department has indicated that the Weedsport Jr.-Sr. High School can be open on Monday, Sept. 28, 2020. The Cayuga County Health Department will guide us in the decision to re-open the Elementary School on Monday, Sept. 28, 2020.

Respectfully,

Shaun A. O’Connor
Superintendent of Schools
