Weedsport sophomore first student in 40 years to attend leadership camp

Weedsport Jr.-Sr. High sophomore Logan Tomaszewski was recently the first student from the school to attend the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) seminar in 40 years. The three-day seminar was held at Utica College.

According to the organization, each spring, 10,000 sophomores from across the country join one of HOBY’s 70 state leadership seminars to hone their leadership talents and apply them to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace, and the community.

Tomaszewski – who has attended leadership camps in the area – said the seminar featured speeches, hands-on group activities and interaction with other leaders. The students also participated in a community service project where they made cards for the residents at a local shelter.

Tomaszewski said it was an honor to be selected.

“One of the speakers talked about some great subjects and about being a selfless leader and how to respect people,” he said.

“It would be great for other students to experience this. I’m happy I had a chance to go.”
