Adult at JV girls basketball game tests positive

Dear Parents/Guardians:

The Weedsport Central School District received notification on March 4, 2021 of a positive COVID-19 test result for an adult individual that was present at the Girls’ Junior Varsity basketball game at Onondaga Central School District on Monday, March 1, 2021.

The District immediately reached out to the Cayuga County Health Department to determine if the members of the Junior Varsity basketball team would have to quarantine given the presence of the student-athletes and the COVID-19 positive person being in the same facility. Given that face coverings were worn at all times by all occupants, that social distancing occurred, and that any interaction between the person that tested positive and the student-athletes was minimal, if at all, the members of Girls’ Junior Varsity Basketball team do not have to quarantine.

While this situation did not result in a widespread quarantine outcome for our student-athletes it certainly reinforces the critical nature of adhering to the most important COVID safety protocols at all times, whether at school or outside of school:

  • Social distancing of at least six feet;
  • Wearing an appropriate face covering; and
  • Washing your hands frequently and using hand sanitizer.

We are fortunate to have a strong, working relationship with the Cayuga County Health Department as we collaborate with them to address public health matters when they arise in the school setting. Given that, and your continued cooperation in embracing and upholding the aforementioned safety measures, we are better able to maintain a safe and healthy environment.

Respectfully,

Shaun A. O’Connor
Superintendent of Schools
