Winter sports team previews

The winter sports season has arrived, and we’re getting a preview of what to expect from each team’s coach! Check out what they have to say below. Go Warriors!

Volleyball

This year’s varsity volleyball team returns with a lot of experience from last season, with half of the starting line-up back. The Lady Warriors offense will be led by its three captains: junior setter Isabel Guerrette, junior middle hitter Trinity Davis, and junior outside Makayla Foltz. Ball control on offense will be the key to the team’s success this season, while looking for some new players to step up and deliver steady passing in serve-receive. As the team looks to qualify for the Class D sectionals,  several contests against class D opponents will be pivotal in achieving that goal. Key matches include home and away contests against McGraw, DeRuyter, and Cincinnatus, along with some traditional opponents.

Bowling

The bowling team is ready to start its third season. Through their hard work, the 10 seniors on the team want to go out with a solid finish. Along with returning senior Gracie Stevens, there is a strong group of underclassmen that will help the squad, highlighted by junior Jacob Blaylock. The team is excited to get back to in-person bowling this year, with matches at Strike and Spare, Rainbow Lanes, and a few other alleys.

Boys Basketball

The 2021-22 boys basketball team will feature a mix of returning players along with newcomers who will look to continue the program’s recent string of success. The Warriors are seeking their 7th straight league title after an 11-2 shortened season last year. The Warriors are also the defending Class C Sectional Champion from the 2019-2020 season. The team has a deep 16 player roster with many pieces that will provide good versatility and balance. Look for returning players Jack Lowery, Landon Kepple, Parker McBride, Quinn Rudick, and Lucio Cole to lead the bevy of newcomers throughout the season. The team is excited to be playing a full schedule in front of fans again, and is looking forward to another season of Weedsport hoops.

Girls Basketball

The 2021-22 varsity girls basketball team is poised to compete for another OHSL Patriot National League title and a Section III, Class C title as well. All-league performers Mariah Quigley (first team) and Sarah Carroll (honorable mention) are among seven returning players from last season’s unblemished 13-0 team. The squad has a very challenging non-league schedule this season, featuring games against Fulton, Union Springs, Mynderse, Palmyra-Macedon, and Westhill. The Warriors are excited to put their up-tempo and unselfish style of play on display in front of their supporters once again.

Swim & Dive

The 2021-22 season brings with it some new faces, after losing some very key seniors in 2021 and the departure of Coach Walter. This season brings new promise, full practices, fast swimming and a strong dive team. Under the leadership of seniors Forrest Nguyen, Nash Hertlein, and Christina Jackson, the swim & dive team has had a strong preseason. The Warriors will be looking to contend for the Sectional title again this season with strong seniors and some younger swimmers with a lot of promise. Please come out and support the team at any home meet. This team has a strong work ethic and a commitment to representing Weedsport Swimming and Diving. They are a team to watch!
