April 6 Update: School closure extended until April 29; June Regents cancelled; school campus grounds closed

Dear Parent/Guardian,

In an effort to keep our school community informed please see the following regarding some of the latest topics to impact many of our stakeholders.

SCHOOL CLOSURE EXTENDED

Governor Cuomo has extended the closure of schools and nonessential businesses until April 29th to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. For clarity of understanding please know that the decision to re-open school continues to be a decision that the Governor will make.

Section III is also extending the start of the Spring sports season to comply with the New Yok State Governor’s mandates and policies related to the coronavirus until April 29th. Section III will continue to adhere to any and all extended dates and regulations established by the NYS Governor’s office.

JUNE REGENTS EXAMS CANCELLED

The June Regents exams will be cancelled, Chancellor Betty Rosa said during today’s April Board of Regents meeting.

Detailed guidance on what the Regents cancellation will mean for New York’s high school students will come out on Tuesday, Rosa promised. Rosa did not provide any further clarification on what the guidance will entail, only that they will “focus on what is in the best interest of our students for the rest of this year.”

She also did not clarify whether the Board will be canceling the exams scheduled for August as well as June.

SCHOOL CAMPUS GROUNDS ARE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

The ensuing directive has been issued by the New York State Department of Parks, Recreation, and Historical Preservation which the District is applying to the availability of such for our campus.

“Playgrounds, Athletic Courts, and Sporting Fields: All State Park playgrounds, athletic courts, and sporting fields are CLOSED. This measure is taken for the safety of all visitors and to stop the spread of COVID-19.”

Consequently, the campus grounds for both schools will be closed to the public. Arrangements for meal pick-up on Mondays and Wednesdays will not be interrupted by the campus grounds closure.

Respectfully,

Shaun A. O’Connor
Superintendent of Schools
