Weedsport football teams looks to defend league and sectional titles

The 2019 football team will look to be in the hunt for back-to-back league and sectional titles. Coach Jon Sgarlata said the team brings back a lot of talent on both sides of the ball and has gone from one of the youngest, most inexperienced teams in 2018 to one of the most experienced in the section this year.

With 15 seniors on the team, many who are playing Varsity football for the first time, the team will be led by returning starting quarterback Owen Mabbett. His brothers Aidan and Connor (they are triplets) make up two of the six running backs that will see action by committee. On defense, linebackers Connor Mabbett and Joel Blumer are joined by returning senior Alex Nemec. All three were named first-team all-league last year, and Blumer earned honorable mention honors on the all-state team.

“The overall size, speed, and depth at the skill positions will be a formidable challenge this season for opponents. The Warriors finished as the No. 2 ranked offense, and the No. 1 ranked defense in scoring a year ago, and they have a chance to be even better this year,” Sgarlata said. “We’re excited because we have a lot of returning talent and depth at key positions.”

Varsity Field Hockey

The 2019 Varsity Field Hockey Team is looking forward to a new and exciting field hockey season. There will be many challenges ahead as the Warriors rebuild after losing seven seniors and an All-League defensive back. Also lost for the season due to injury is senior Olivia Rudick, the team’s All-League defensive back. This year’s team will be led by: seniors Bridget Hickey, McKenna Holmes, and Aubrey Ouderkirk; returning juniors Erin Grady, Suzie Nemec, Emma Stark, and Jenna Sullivan; and sophomores Christina Jackson and Mariah Quigley. New roster members this year include junior Jocelyn Kepple, sophomores Isabella Petrus and Rachel Sheets, and freshmen Trinity Davis, Morgan Flask, and Faith Grady. Weedsport opened its season with the Cayuga County Field Hockey Championship Tournament, held on Aug. 26 at Weedsport High School and Aug. 28-29 at Holland Stadium in Auburn. Weedsport then opens its OHSL schedule at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6i n Cato-Meridian against the Blue Devils.
