Weedsport Elementary is celebrating the creation of a new after-school team called “Boys on the Right Track.” The running team is modeled after similar program “Girls Run For Fun,” which takes place in the spring each year.
The team is working towards running a 5K, which is 3.1 miles. Along the way, students learn social and emotional skills for everyday life. Coaches Mariesa Simon and Sarah Mercier said 27 boys are participating in the program in this inaugural year. Students in grades 3-5 were able to participate.
It’s not all about running. The students recently held a bake sale to raise money for a scholarship. All proceeds will go towards helping out a graduating senior in the Class of 2023.
If you’d like to cheer on the team as students take on their 5K run, you can head to Weedsport Jr.-Sr. High School on Monday, October 17th. The team will be using the track, and the 5K is expected to kick off at 4 p.m..
The team would like to give a shoutout to this year’s volunteers: Margaret Bacon, Erin Crabtree, and Tim Cowin.
