Masks will no longer be required in school beginning Wednesday, March 2nd

Please find a message from Superintendent O’Connor regarding masks in school below.

To all,

As you may have heard, Governor Hochul will be rescinding the school-based masking mandate effective March 2, 2022.

The Cayuga County Health Department will be following the recommendations from the State and therefore supporting the decision to not require masking in schools effective March 2, 2022.

Thus, Weedsport Central School District will be required to have students, staff, and visitors to wear masks for 2 more days – Monday, February 28th and Tuesday, March 1st – and then beginning Wednesday, March 2nd the wearing of masks will be a personal choice based on comfort and risk tolerance. The lifting of the mask mandate not only applies to the school building setting but also on buses and school operated vehicles.

While this is yet another indicator that we are emerging from the grip of the pandemic, the Cayuga County Health Department continues to require school districts to keep up with the work we have been doing to reduce the spread of illness in our schools. Thus, the District will continue to screen students and staff for illness and send them home if ill, will continue to test and follow protocols as appropriate, will continue the physical distancing in classrooms and the lunchroom, and will continue enhanced cleaning where appropriate.

If any new information emerges over the next two days regarding the mask mandate or anything relevant to such, I am committed to sharing that information with you as quickly as possible. In the meanwhile, I thank you in advance for your cooperation on the wearing of masks on Monday and Tuesday of this week.

Respectfully,

Shaun A. O’Connor

Superintendent of Schools

Weedsport Central School District
