| Brief History of Weedsport |
Historically the village of Weedsport was settled shortly before 1800 and incorporated in 1831. National transportation lines and businesses they attracted have always been significant to its development. Originating on the Military Tract for Revolutionary War veterans, on a trail leading westward, the settlement flourished first from the establishment of the Erie Canal, followed by the New York Central , Lehigh Valley and West Shore Railroads, and finally the New York State Thruway.
Those who are familiar with New York State history note that Adam Helmer, hero of Drums Along the Mohawk settled with his neighbors in the area known as Cottle Road. With the building of the Erie Canal Transportation System, the Weed Brothers opened a basin in the area attracting a variety of businesses.
